Dr. Carlson is board certified in both general surgery and plastic surgery, giving him a skill-set that allows him to treat cancer and reconstruct the damage it can cause, most frequently with breast cancer and head and neck cancer patients. His studies have afforded significant improvement in the outcome of breast reconstruction for patients with breast cancer, particularly his refinement of skin sparing mastectomy in the early years of the procedure. He was one of only a handful of surgeons nationwide performing the technique, and the improvements he made to its methods as well as his outcomes research contributed to making the procedure as common as it is today.
