Seven division faculty, five physician assistants/nurse practitioners, four vascular surgery fellows, two PGY-4s, two PGY-2s and one PGY-1 general surgery resident provide operative, endovascular, and medical therapy for acute venous thrombosis and chronic venous insufficiency, abdominal aortic aneurysm, thoracic aortic aneurysm, carotid artery disease, peripheral arterial occlusive disease, and varicose veins and spider veins at Emory University Hospital and the Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Diagnostic imaging services are provided through the nationally-accredited Emory Non-Invasive Vascular Laboratory, which is part of the vascular surgery outpatient complex at The Emory Clinic. The lab's diagnostic capabilities include duplex ultrasound, segmental pressure, and velocity waveform studies. As contributors to one of the leading investigative centers in the nation, our vascular surgery specialists have often been directly involved with developing or refining the procedures they perform, such as division chief Dr. Elliot L. Chaikof's establishment of the first Emory program for endovascular aortic aneurysm repair in 1992, and Dr. Karthikeshwar Kasirajan's participation in a recent clinical trial testing the Parodi antiembolism system's ability to prevent the vascular dementia that can afflict patients who have received treatment for stroke. More details about our clinical programs and services can be found on our Emory Healthcare website. During the past year, our clinical faculty cared for 8647 patients in our outpatient clinics; 5143 patients in our non-invasive vascular labs; and performed major vascular and endovascular surgeries on 2342 patients, including over 350 aortic aneurysm repairs, 200 carotid artery interventions, and 300 reconstructive procedures for lower extremity arterial disease. Over the past four years, division faculty have performed more than 600 open and endovascular repairs for thoracic aortic aneurysms; more than 1000 open and endovascular repairs for abdominal aortic aneurysms; over 600 carotid endarterectomies and stenting procedures; more than 1000 lower extremity bypasses, angioplasty and stenting procedures; and over 400 endovenous laser ablations for treatment of varicose veins.
