 Study Title

NIH/NINDS: Carotid Revasclarization Endarterectomy vs. Stenting Trial (CREST) Protocol 99-705

 Study Details

Study Dates: 2006–March 2009 (study to be renewed)

Lead Investigator: Elliot L. Chaikof, MD, PhD

If left untreated, carotid artery stenosis — acute narrowing of the carotid artery that supplies blood to the brain — can lead to stroke. This trial will study and compare the efficacy of two separate surgical treatments for carotid artery stenosis: stent implantation and carotid endarterectomy (CEA), the latter procedure being the current standard of care for the condition.

 Study Mechanics

Participants will receive either CEA or carotid artery stenting, after which they will be examined and evaluated during follow-up visits at one, six, and 12 month increments.

 Abbreviated Participant Criteria

green arrow Symptomatic or asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis
green arrow A variety of other exclusions will require examination by an Emory vascular surgeon before eligibility can be determined
