 Faculty Synopsis

Dr. Grace Rozycki has directed the division of trauma/surgical critical care since 1994. Her major research interest is the surgeon's use of ultrasound in the evaluation of patients with acute surgical problems, a focus which she has developed into multiple courses for the American College of Surgeons. She is also a registered diagnostic medical sonographer.

Dr. David Feliciano, chief of both surgery and vascular surgery at Grady and a current director of the American Board of Surgery, is a luminary in the fields of vascular and abdominal trauma. He has received over 30 teaching awards; has edited six editions of Trauma, an essential textbook in the field; and is the co-editor of Acute Care Surgery, the first textbook of its type.

Dr. Feliciano’s extensive research in vascular and abdominal trauma and Dr. Rozycki’s development of surgeon-performed ultrasound have been instrumental in redefining how trauma surgery is practiced in the U.S.

Additional Faculty:

green arrow Dr. Christopher Dente is the associate director of trauma at Grady and associate director of the surgical critical care residency. His research interests include retrospective and prospective studies on surgeon performed ultrasound in the trauma setting and injuries to the intraperitoneal colon.

 Postgraduate Training

At certain PGY levels, general surgery residents rotate through the Trauma Center and the Burn Unit, with the latter service providing residents the opportunity to participate in the assessment and resuscitation of burn patients, burn wound management, skin grafting, reconstruction and long-term follow-up care. General surgery, emergency medicine and oral surgery residents also rotate as PGY-2s on the SICU. Daily rounds in the Trauma Center and the SICU are conducted with the attending surgeon and the current trauma or surgical critical care fellow.

The division also offers an ACGME approved two-year trauma/surgical critical care fellowship that comprises one year in trauma and one year in surgical critical care. The substantial volume and high acuity of injured patients combined with the large percentage of penetrating injuries gives fellows an impressive range of experience in both operative and nonoperative management. Fellows also design and conduct clinical studies, write research proposals and analyze data, often presenting the results of their research at national meetings and competitions.
