Ranked among the busiest solid organ transplant programs in the country, the division of transplantation's clinical and research specialties are liver, kidney, kidney/pancreas and islet transplantation for adult and pediatric patients. Division faculty performed Georgia's first transplants in all of these specialties:
Dr. Christian Larsen is the chief of the division, as well as director of the Emory Transplant Center (ETC), an umbrella organization that oversees and integrates all of Emory's academic, clinical care and research resources in organ transplantation. With Dr. Thomas Pearson, Dr. Larsen co-directs Emory's internationally known transplantation immunology laboratory, which studies the immunologic mechanisms of transplant rejection and immunologic tolerance with the primary goal of achieving true immune tolerance in organ and tissue transplants. General surgery residents rotate through the transplant service in their first and third years of training and often do research sabbaticals in the immunology lab. For candidates who have completed a residency in general surgery, the division also offers a two year clinical surgery fellowship accredited by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons that features training in kidney, pancreas and liver transplantation. Interested fellows may elect to spend additional time focusing on basic or translational research by working in the laboratories of division faculty.
