CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Successful completion of an accredited master's level or higher PA or acute care NP program with a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

  • Three letters of recommendation, including at least one from an NP/PA program director or current employer.

  • Accreditation by a nationally recognized body as a PA or ACNP.

  • Licensed to practice medicine in Georgia or eligible to become licensed.

  • BLS/ACLS certification.

  • Provide a one-page, typed statement of reasons for interest in the program.

APP FELLOW RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform accurate and complete history and physical examinations on preoperative cardiothoracic surgery patients.

  • Perform accurate and complete daily clinical assessments of pre- and postoperative cardiothoracic surgical patients; review, interpret, and integrate daily laboratory and radiographic data into patients' daily assessments and plans.

  • Perform intraoperative assistance for cardiothoracic surgery patients, including saphenous vein harvesting.

  • Prepare discharge summaries upon completion of each patient's hospital course.

  • Educate patients and families on procedures and expectations regarding all aspects of patients' care.

  • Complete all required didactic readings and assignments in accordance with the program syllabus.

  • Attend all scheduled didactic lectures — proper documentation and approval from the program director, associate program director, or clinical coordinator is required for any missed sessions.

REQUIREMENTS FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION

  • Obtain and display clinical competency of management of cardiothoracic surgical patients as determined by the program director, associate program director, medical director, and participating clinical faculty members.

  • Complete and pass all required didactic readings and assignments.

  • Complete and pass all written examinations.

  • Present one topic of choice per rotation to the clinical faculty to an approved audience, as determined by the program director, associate program director, or clinical coordinator for that rotation.

  • Complete an end-of-year project, specific qualifications to be determined.

CREDENTIALS AWARDED

Upon completion of the program, the APP fellow will be awarded a Certificate of Completion signed by the chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, the medical director of the program, and the program director.
