Resident Training

General surgery residents can participate in the division's clinical and research endeavors by working on the oncology surgical service during their first, second, third and chief years. Educational packets are distributed to junior and senior surgical residents and objective pre- and post-rotation-tests are given to determine the effectiveness of the training program and how much residents have learned.

Breast Cancer Fellowship

Overview

The mission of Emory's one-year Breast Cancer Fellowship is to teach evidenced based clinical care, encourage inquiry with a research focused approach and to develop leadership skills for future career opportunities and growth with the goal of producing graduates that will become leaders in academic breast surgery. Initiated in July 2007, the fellowship is one of only 33 such programs in the U.S. undergoing the official process of being approved by the Society of Surgical Oncology.

The high profile of the division of surgical oncology's breast program has been underscored by the work and influence of William C. Wood, MD, the current chairman of the Department of Surgery and an international breast expert. Dr. Wood and other faculty are active participants in clinical and translational research and can provide comprehensive state of the art treatment for their patients.

The breast cancer fellow will spend time at the Winship Cancer Institute, Emory University Hospital, Emory Crawford Long Hospital and the AVON Comprehensive Breast Center at Grady Memorial Hospital, all of which have a combined annual case load of approximately seven hundred breast cancer patients. Winship is home to the division, as well as to the Breast Health Center, Breast Imaging Center, and the departments of medical oncology and radiation oncology. The fellow will attend weekly multi-disciplinary dedicated breast case conferences where novel patient care approaches are discussed and patients identified for enrollment in clinical trials.

Sheryl Gabram, MD, directs the fellowship. In addition to treating breast cancer, she researches disparities of care for breast cancer patients. At Grady Hospital she directs the AVON Comprehensive Breast Center and is chief of Oncologic Services, a Georgia Cancer Center of Excellence.
