The surgical component of the Emory Children's Center, the division of pediatric surgery provides trauma surgery, airway and gastrointestinal endoscopy, laparoscopic and thoracoscopic procedures, oncologic surgery, surgery for neonates, ECMO, head and neck surgery and other general surgical procedures to infants, children and adolescents at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. Division surgeons also provide surgical services at Grady Memorial Hospital and offer consultations at Emory Crawford Long Hospital, Dekalb Medical Center and Emory Eastside Medical Center. Division chief Dr. Richard Ricketts received his MD from Northwestern University Medical School and completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Southern California–Los Angeles County Medical Center. He then did his pediatric surgery fellowship at Children's Memorial Hospital, Chicago. Dr. Ricketts specializes in neonatal surgery, prenatal consultations, necrotizing enterocolitis, Hirschsprung’s disease, pediatric oncology and thoracic surgery. The Emory pediatric surgery residency is an ACGME approved two-year program in which division residents evaluate preoperative and postoperative patients in the outpatient clinic and assist with all surgical procedures, including simple umbilical hernias, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and laparoscopic and thoracoscopic operations. As residents master increasingly difficult skills and become adept at communicating with children and parents, they are assigned higher levels of responsibility. After completing rotations on the pediatric surgery service, residents should have a basic understanding of a variety of routine and complex pediatric surgical problems as well as pediatric oncology. Attending staff supervise all activities. The division offers a comprehensive didactic curriculum examining all major topics in pediatric surgery. Residents participate in weekly conferences on morbidity and mortality, pediatric radiology and pediatric oncology; attend bimonthly lectures on basic science topics; and participate in a monthly pediatric surgical pathology conference and journal club. In addition to attending daily rounds, residents take part in weekly formal attending rounds. Senior residents organize and present the weekly pediatric surgery conference for surgical and pediatric house officers, pediatric and surgical attendings and nurses. Residency Inquiries and Applications Inquiries and applications regarding the pediatric surgery residency should be directed to: Mark
