Before coming to Emory in 2004, division chief Dr. Steven Roser was the director of graduate medical education at New York-Presbyterian Hospital as well as director of the division of oral and maxillofacial surgery and associate dean for hospital affairs at the School of Dental and Oral Surgery of Columbia University. In addition to his clinical, academic, and research activities, Dr. Roser has made many trips to Central and South America as a volunteer team leader for Healing the Children to provide such services as cleft lip and cleft palate repair to disadvantaged children.

Dr. Martin Steed, director of the division's residency program, completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at Emory. In addition to studying the outcomes of oral and maxillofacial trauma surgery, he is currently investigating the use of three dimensional computed tomography in assessing maxillofacial trauma.

Please see the division's Emory Healthcare website for detailed clinical information.

 Training Opportunities

OMFS Residency

The division accepts four residents each year for either a four-year certificate or an integrated six-year MD/oral surgery program. Encountering approximately 600 major inpatient cases per year, residents see inpatients at Emory University Hospital, Emory Crawford Long Hospital, and the two hospitals encompassed by Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. They also see inpatients and outpatients at The Emory Clinic, Grady Memorial Hospital, and the Atlanta VA Medical Center. OMFS grand rounds conferences are held every Monday morning, senior level residents conduct weekly evening teaching sessions, and the OMFS journal club convenes monthly. Residents are often sponsored to the AAOMS meeting and other select meetings.

For more details about the CODA accredited OMFS residency, please download the OMFS Residency Brochure PDF (Adobe Acrobat required).

Internship

Three one-year internships are available to those who have shown an exceptional acceptance rate into other oral and maxillofacial surgery programs.

Externship

The division hosts a number of one-week to one-month externship opportunities for dental students interested in gaining experience and exposure to the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Externs will be introduced to all aspects of the program and receive hands-on experience.

Fellowship

The program's post-training fellowship emphasizes orthognathic, TMJ, and cosmetic surgery.
