Mihir M. Shah wins Society of Asian Academic Surgeons' Junior Faculty Award
JANUARY 2022
Mihir M. Shah, MD, assistant professor of surgery and associate director of the Complex General Surgical Oncology Fellowship, has received a 2022 Junior Faculty Award from the Society of Asian Academic Surgeons (SAAS). The award includes a travel grant to attend the Surgical Investigators' Course at the Academic Surgical Congress, an annual joint meeting of the Association of Academic Surgery (AAS) and Society of University Surgeons (SUS), as well as a two-year appointment to the SAAS Scholarships Committee.
The mission of SAAS is to cultivate, nurture, and support the advancement of Asians in academic surgery. In addition to welcoming any nationality from the Asian continent, membership in SAAS is open to anyone of any ethnicity who has an interest in promoting underrepresented populations in any academic surgical arena.
The AAS and SUS-sponsored Surgical Investigators' Course is designed for early career prospective researchers to learn the essential elements of a successful research proposal and how funding agencies work, obtain an insider's view of the grant review process within a study section, and to garner feedback and guidance on a current grant proposal.
As a member of the Scholarships Committee, Dr. Shah will contribute to the selection of surgical trainees that will receive travel grants to attend the Annual Fall Courses hosted by the Association for Academic Surgery.
Dr. Shah joined the Emory Division of Surgical Oncology in 2018, and specializes in complex laparoscopic and robotic surgery for treating cancer of the liver, pancreas, biliary tree, stomach, esophagus, small bowel, and retroperitoneum. He is interested in outcomes research and is the local site PI for international and national clinical trials in hepatopancreatobiliary and gastrointestinal cancers.
