His 1899 purchase of the bottling rights to Coca-Cola enabled Joseph B. Whitehead, Sr., to become one of the South's leading businessmen and philanthropists. In 1932, Mr. Joseph B. Whitehead, Jr., and his mother, Mrs. Lettie Pate Whitehead Evans, contributed $25,000 to support the first surgical research laboratory at Emory. In 1939, Joseph Whitehead, Jr., established the Joseph Brown Whitehead Foundation to endow a chair in surgery with a gift totaling just under $1 million.

Following the deaths of her sons Joseph, Jr., and Conkey Pate Whitehead, Mrs. Evans provided for the addition of the Conkey Pate Whitehead Surgical Pavilion to Emory University Hospital, which included a state-of-the-art surgical suite that advanced the level of medical care available in Atlanta and the entire southeast, and the Joseph Brown Whitehead Memorial Room as a memorial to the Whitehead family.
