Overview Widely known for refining and developing minimally invasive procedures, the division of general and gastrointestinal surgery, directed by John F. Sweeney, MD, offers surgical treatment of inflammatory bowel, colorectal, endocrine, gallbladder, pancreatic, esophageal and gastric diseases as well as intra-abdominal infections, hernias and morbid obesity. Through such programs as the Emory Endosurgery Unit and the Emory Simulation, Training and Robotics Center (ESTAR), the division has gained international status for clinical, academic and educational leadership in the application of endoscopic and laparoscopic techniques.
