OMFS Surgeons Give Free Oral Cancer Screenings at NASCAR Race Faculty and current residents of Emory's division of oral and maxillofacial surgery and Department of Otolaryngology conducted free oral cancer screenings at the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Racing Series and Nextel Cup Series at the Atlanta Motor Speedway (AMS) on October 27 and 28, 2007. This was the third year that the Georgia Chapter of the Yul Brynner Head and Neck Cancer Foundation (YBF) and NASCAR partnered in sponsoring the screening, the goal of which is to discover pre-malignant lesions and early stage cancers, though this year the Bobby Hamilton Racing Team was also involved. The team's namesake, longtime and popular NASCAR driver Bobby Hamilton, Sr., died of laryngeal cancer on January 7, 2007. Over 60 volunteers from Emory University and the Atlanta area volunteered for the two-day event, using six private screening rooms in the corporate display area of AMS to examine over 200 racing fans. The Emory oral and maxillofacial surgeons who participated included faculty members Dr. Steven Roser and Dr. Martin Steed as well as residents Dr. Bruce Anderson, Dr. John Threadgill, and Dr. Shyam Prasad. |
