Emory Endosurgery Unit, Dept. of Surgery Department of Surgery

 Overview

Internationally recognized for clinical, educational, investigational and academic leadership in endoscopic surgery, the Endosurgery Unit was founded in 1992. Committed to advancing minimally invasive surgery through education, research and surgical treatment, the unit provides patients with state-of-the-art endoscopic and laparoscopic procedures while giving surgical residents the opportunity to participate in these procedures. Staffed by Emory general surgeons and directed by Dr. Edward Lin, the unit's clinical and research specialties encompass foregut, hernia, bariatric, colon and solid organ surgery.

The unit's fellowship program, the first of its type in the nation, offers either one-year clinical fellowships with the option of a second year of research or one-year research-only fellowships. The unit also sponsors didactic and practical courses in laparoscopic inguinal and ventral hernia repair, laparoscopic colon surgery, bariatric surgery, modern management of foregut diseases and other minimally invasive procedures.

 Endosurgery Unit Mission Statement

To perform the highest quality research and education in minimally invasive surgery while simultaneously delivering premium patient care via endosurgical techniques. To realize this mission, the unit will:

  • Develop and maintain clinical programs of excellence.

  • Integrate endosurgery concepts and techniques into general surgery resident training, thereby preparing future surgeons to apply these techniques in their practice.

  • Prepare future leaders in minimally invasive surgery through a fellowship program offering both clinical and research experience.

  • Foster collaboration in endosurgical techniques within Emory and across specialties.

  • Employ courses and workshops, telemedicine and visiting professor lectures to cultivate and maintain outreach programs for surgeons and residents outside of Emory who lack access to resources and expertise in minimally invasive surgery.
