 Overview

Modeled on the multi-disciplinary weight management practice of the Emory Bariatric Center, one of the leading programs of its type in the southeast, this five-day mini-fellowship/workshop sposnored by the Emory Endosurgery Unit is available upon request to surgeons, nurses, PAs and other healthcare professionals who will be involved in a bariatrics program. Didactic sessions give extensive information on both open and laparoscopic techniques, instrumentation, indications, risks, outcomes and how to coordinate the hospital, business and outpatient aspects of a bariatric practice. Participants will observe at least three-to-four bariatric procedures, make hospital rounds and take part in the outpatient clinic. Hands-on experience with animal and cadaver models will familiarize participants with the techniques of bariatric surgery, including gastric bypass and vertical banded gastroplasty.

Office managers and administrative staff may attend those portions of the workshop pertaining to the outpatient clinic and business aspects of bariatrics. In fact, the fellowship can be tailored to the level of experience and interest of the participants. For example, surgeons may prefer to observe six-eight procedures while administrators may want to focus on managing an outpatient setting.

To be approved for enrollment, surgeons, nurses and PAs must have completed a preliminary course in bariatric surgery (this does not apply to office managers or administrative staff). For information on such courses, please call 404.712.2196.
