The division offers an ACGME approved three-year residency in cardiothoracic surgery, emphasizing preoperative and postoperative care of the cardiac and thoracic surgical patient and training in the management of congenital, acquired, traumatic and neoplastic diseases of the thorax. Applicants need to have successfully completed an approved residency in general surgery and be either certified or eligible for board certification in general surgery.

Residents rotate through five hospitals, see approximately 2,200 adult cardiac cases, 900 thoracic cases and 800 congenital heart cases per year and become familiar with all aspects of cardiothoracic surgery. By the time they complete the program, residents have often performed approximately 700 cases as surgeon or first assistant. Residents interested in surgical management of congenital heart disease may pursue an additional year as a pediatric cardiac surgical fellow.
