Biography

Dr. Bouloux is credited with introducing temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthroscopy and total joint replacement for TMJ, microsurgery, and interpositional allogeneic nerve grafting for trigeminal nerve repair to Emory's oral and maxillofacial surgery clinical services.

His primary research interests are TMJ dysfunction including surgical outcomes, psychological predictors of outcomes, laser-assisted surgical arthroscopy, and the use of hyaluronic acid. His multicenter studies into the efficiency of various surgical treatments for temporomandibular disorders have advanced the science and practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery, and he is considered one of the world's leaders in evidence-based management of temporomandibular disorders. Current studies include the evaluation of surgical plates in the repair of jaw fractures and mandibular resection.

In 2017, Dr. Bouloux received the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation Research Recognition Award for his significant work in the area of temporomandibular joint dysfunction and treatment, as well as the Daniel Laskin Award for that year's most outstanding publications in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
